Kenya Trek
Trek through breathtaking Kenya, climbing an extinct volcano and taking in the sights and sounds of the Great Rift Valley!
Kenya is famous for its spectacular wildlife and stunning terrain, and over the course of our challenge we’ll witness plenty of both! During our adventure we’ll explore Hell’s Gate National Park, named for the gorge that runs through its centre and known for its volcanic scenery. The extinct volcano of Mount Longonot is next on our list, and we’ll even peek into its centre from the summit, taking in views of the dense forest within!
Our challenge comes to a close with a game drive in Nairobi National Park, followed by visits to the Elephant Orphanage and Giraffe Park. If you’re looking to combine beautiful scenery with incredible wildlife, this is the trek for you!

Challenge Itinerary
Day 1 - Depart UK
We depart the UK on our overnight flight to Kenya.
Day 2 - Circular walk around Lake Naivasha
Upon arrival in Nairobi, we transfer to Fish Eagle’s Camp on the shores of Lake Naivasha. Located in the Great Rift Valley, Lake Naivasha is a freshwater lake inhabited by hippopotamus and various bird species! After lunch, we’ll take a short transfer to the nearby Crater Lake for a warmup walk, where we’ll keep an eye out for the local wildlife, including giraffes and zebras. We’ll spend tonight at Fish Eagle Camp, with an evening meal and briefing on the week ahead before getting a much-needed night’s rest.
Day 3 - Lake Naivasha - Hell’s Gate National Park
Our day begins with a short trek to Hell’s Gate National Park! Once inside, we walk through typical African savannah and volcanic terrain, at an altitude of 2000m above sea level in a mainly flat region. The park was established specifically for game trails, we’ll look out for the gazelles, buffalo and zebras. This evening we’ll spend the night within the park at Naiburta campsite.
Hell’s Gate National Park is named for the gorge that runs through its centre, created by intense geothermal activity in the area. Famous for its spectacular scenery including its towering cliffs, the park is home to a wide range of wildlife including giraffes and buffalo, and is one of Kenya’s smallest National Parks at just 68 square kilometres.
Trekking distance – approx. 26km
Day 4 - Hell’s Gate National Park
We begin the day with a short walk to Hell’s Gate Gorge before entering a steep canyon with fast-running water, geysers and wild vegetation. Our lunch today is at a picnic site located above the gorge. After lunch we continue through the rocky gorge, passing through wild bushes before returning to the Naiburta campsite for a second night.
Trekking distance – approx. 18km
Day 5 - Longonot National Park
Our destination today is Longonot National Park! Today we’ll be trekking through savannah with a mix of flat and hilly terrain, at an altitude of over 2000m above sea level. The vast expanse around us will be incredibly impressive and gives us a real feeling of being in the outback, without our home comforts to distract us! This evening we’ll spend the night within the park.
Trekking distance – approx. 18km
Day 6 - Mount Longonot
A tough day awaits us, as we make our way to the top of Mount Longonot! An extinct volcano, the mountain towers over the surrounding landscape, and provides incredible views of the Great Rift Valley from its summit. We start with a climb of around 550m to the rim of the crater, before stopping for a group photo and a briefing on the hike around the perimeter. We then follow along the crater’s jagged edge, where we can peek into the volcano itself! From the summit, we’ll take in fantastic views of the Great Rift Valley and Lake Naivasha. Once we’ve taken in these wonderful sights, we descend to our camp to relax after a rewarding day. This evening we transfer to Malewa camp (approximately 2 hours).
Trekking distance – approx. 16km
Day 7 - Malewa River Gorge
We’re now in the middle of Africa at its natural best, sharing the area with a multitude of flowers, trees and wildlife! We start our trek by crossing the shallow Malewa River Gorge, with its thick African bush and extraordinary sounds of animal life surrounding us. After about an hour we reach our last crater pool, before trekking to Malewa Camp for lunch. Following lunch, we transfer to our hotel accommodation in Nairobi, where we’ll get ready for our celebratory meal tonight!
Trekking distance – approx. 12km
Day 8 - Nairobi National Park / Elephant Orphanage / Giraffe Park
It’s an early start today, as we set off on a game drive into Nairobi National Park. Later in the morning, we’ll visit the Elephant orphanage located in the park! After stopping for lunch, we’ll visit the Giraffe Park where we’ll marvel at the population of Rothschild giraffes. This evening we’ll enjoy our final meal as a group!
Day 9 - Return to UK
Today we’ll enjoy a free day to relax in Nairobi! In the evening we’ll transfer to the airport for our flight back to the UK.
